Insanity Week 5: Fit Test, Heart Monitor, & Holy Max Cardio Pain

April 21, 2013 § Leave a comment

So, I was feeling pretty darn good after recovery week.  So nice and relaxing; it did not prepare me for what was about to happen: Week 5.  On the first day was the fit test.

Fit test 3 (day 36) results:

Switch Kicks-93

Power Jacks-33

Power Knees- 55

Power Jumps- 17 (decrease)

Globe Jumps- 6

Suicide Jumps- 10

Push-Up Jacks- 12 (decrease)

Low Plank Oblique- 33

I blame myself for the 2 decreases.  I usually look at the previous results so that I can push myself to do better but on those two I just didn’t look and was pretty disappointed because I think I could have pushed myself harder to beat my last score.  So when the fit test was done, I was like “what?  they want me to do a whole other workout now?  What the fuck?!”  I’m already exhausted from the fit test and I put in Max Interval Circuit.  Now, that is just mean, Shaun T. Mean!  Another 60 minutes!  Huh?  Wha?  Seriously?!  Ok, let’s do this!  It also so happens that this was my 2nd day wearing my brand new super groovy Polar heart monitor.  On my 1st day, I burned 345 calories in a 40 minute workout. Below are results for day 2.

Heart Monitor Results (4/19/13): My ideal heart rate is 121-158.  Workout duration: 1:23:54.  Calories burned: 771 (that’s right bitches).  Average heart rate: 148.  Max heart rate: 167.  In zone: 1:03:58

That night I was in pain.  The next morning, more pain.  That shit was hard.  It was like take month 1 and adding a new element to every move.  It was grueling and the time extension was I think the worst part.  I had to skip 4/20/13 because I was just too exhausted and in too much pain.  I vowed that today (4/21) I would do 2 workouts.  1 in the am and 1 in the pm.  I totally kicked cardio butt today.  Woke up, did my Max Interval Plyo and burned 480 calories, then just finished (5:30pm) Max Cardio conditioning and burned another 407 calories!

I also broke out into hives on my neck, but that is a totally different blog topic.

Insanity: I ❤ Recovery Week

April 16, 2013 § 2 Comments

Recovery week so far has been awesome.  I’m seriously in love with recovery week.  I love the workout and really strengthening the core.  You really feel like you are doing something positive to your body.  I also like that you are not supposed to over do it.  It lets me relax a little.

I totally cheat during the shoulder burner things at the end.  By the end of the “flapping” of the arms I’m ready to collapse, so I sit (still in plie) at the very edge of my short couch, so I’m basically in the same position, but I’ve got something holding me up.  I know, I know, but I still feel my core working while doing the exercises to the end and my goal is to get rid of the couch.

As far as weight loss goes, nothing more.  Some people would probably be like, “what?  how is that humanly possible to be at the end of week 4 and not have lost more than 5 lbs?”  Unfortunately, this is my life.  It’s nearly impossible for me to lose weight AT ALL.  I’m the gal who went on the HCG diet and gained weight…seriously!  I know I’m losing inches, though, and that is very important.  My favorite jeans I shrunk in the wash a month ago finally fit again!  I can totally see a difference in my torso and according to the measuring tape, I’ve lost about 1.75″ in the thighs- which is HUGE!

Anyways, I’m still happy, still going and already starting to plan which Beachbody program I want to do next.

Insanity Day (I’ve lost count): High Knees = Death

April 4, 2013 § Leave a comment

I don’t know what it is about those 3 rounds of warm-ups but every single time I get to “high knees” I want to shoot Shaun T in the face.  I end up doing something that might resemble high-knee-marching-in-place slooooooowwwwwwwly.  I’m still trying to lift my legs up high using my core, but at a rapid pace?  Hell no!  The weirdest part is that the only time my body is willing to do the high knees is in the 3rd round.  My mental process is ridiculous.  I make my body do it because I’m thinking…it’s almost over!

So now I have a new goal during the Insanity program- 3 rounds of high knees!  And no replacing butt kicks with high knees!  When I’ve done 3 rounds of high knees I know I’ve accomplished something great.

Insanity Day 11: Exodus

March 25, 2013 § Leave a comment

I only named this post “Exodus” because it is the first night of the Jewish holiday of Passover.  I have not exited the Insanity program.  In fact, I’ve completed 11 days of crazy and I’m feeling pretty great.  I really love the convenience of the program.  I can do it in the morning or when I get home from work or late at night, it doesn’t matter.  I’ve previously been practicing Bikram Yoga for over a year and while I love it to death, you really have to plan your entire day around your yoga class.  For one, you need to find a 3 hour window in your day: get there early to get a good spot and get acclimated, practice for 1.5 hours, then shower, dress and go.  If it is first thing in the morning, I have to make sure I get a good nights sleep.  If it is after work, I have to make sure I made good food choices during the day, not eating within 2 hours prior and drink a shit ton of water.  It was definitely worth it; you feel like a million bucks when you leave and you are completely relaxed.  So great.  With Insanity, I’m super pumped.  I feel like fist pumping into the air I’m so excited.  And, it totally puts me in a good mood, and I feel like I’ve accomplished something- especially when my 4 year old has been vomiting for 3 days.  Poor kid : (

Insanity Day 8: Fooled Feet & Bikram Knows Best

March 23, 2013 § Leave a comment

So when I was pregnant with my 4.5 year old I gained 80 lbs.  Yes, 80lbs.  30lbs of which were water.  During my pregnancy I developed a hiatal hernia that pushed everything upwards and cause horrible heart burn and indigestion.  After H was born the heart burn and indigestion continued, almost every day.  I went to a doc who put me on meds but told me the only way to get rid of the heart burn and indigestion was to lose weight and that long term on the pills would do more harm than good.  After months on the medication, I tried to come off of it.  Every time I tried, I would get physically ill.  On the advice of my chiropractor, I started doing Bikram Yoga for my back issues, stress, etc…within 2 weeks of starting Bikram, I was off the meds.  It was seriously amazing.  Bikram really does change your body from the inside out.  I was going 3 times a week (as much as I could swing with a job, husband and child).  I think if I could have gone more, I would have been able to also lose weight in addition to experiencing the benefits of Bikram.  I’ve been doing Bikram for over 1 year now but decided that if I was going to try Insanity, I would have to put Bikram on hold for a couple months while tortured myself 6 days a week.  I can’t handle doing both.  So, now it has been almost 3 weeks since I stopped doing yoga, and guess what?  My indigestion is back.  I’m now going to really try to do my best with Insanity because I really need to lose the weight to stop the effects of the hernia.  Then, after Insanity, I can go back to Bikram to relax and maintain.

On another note, I’m returning my new Zappos clown kicks.  I was 5 minutes into my workout with them on when the same sharp horrible pain began again.  What did I do?  I did the rest of the workout barefoot and the pain went away.  Should I be looking into those barefoot sneaker things?  I don’t know what to do anymore.

Insanity Day 7: 1 Down, 8 To Go

March 21, 2013 § Leave a comment

I did it!  6 days of torture and today I rest.  I think I’ve earned it.  I’ve survived.  I’m feeling pretty darn good.  I think I can do 8 more weeks like this.  Yesterday I realized, though, I really need new sneakers…OR I need new feet, because my feet are KILLING me during the workouts.  I read on the Insanity community boards that a lot of people have this same issue.  Of course, lots of people with the same issue, but not a lot of people with a good solution.  Some people said that they do the workout barefoot.  Unfortunately, my pain does not stop when I’m barefoot.  This used to happen to me every time I did Bikram as well (and I was barefoot).  Bad bad foot cramps is what it feels like.  It’s pretty horrible.  It’s worse when doing the stretching parts; don’t ask me why.  Anyhow, my V.I.P. Zappos delivery should arrive any second now with a brand spanking new pair of super cool sneakers and gel inserts for more cushioning.  We’ll see if that helps.  Course I won’t know today cause it’s my day off!
